Urban Wildlife

Very little is currently known about mammals in our towns and cities. Through the MISE Project, we have conducted urban otter surveys in Cork and Waterford and have also surveyed for small mammals in schools in urban areas. Surprisingly, we have found DNA evidence for woodmouse, bank vole, pygmy shrew and rat using our bait pots. We have also been using hedgehog tunnels to collect footprint evidence of hedgehogs and small mammals. This is also an interesting area for teachers and for Tidy Towns Groups to get involved in surveying their local spot and places of interest.
